El Gouna - a New Center of International Academic Activities in the Red Sea Region

With its new Campus El Gouna in Egypt, Technische Universität Berlin embarks on a fascinating new international project with a very special profile. Three master courses started in October 2012. The topics of Energy Engineering, Water Engineering and Urban Development have been chosen as they address problems and challenges of vital importance for the future of Egypt and other countries in the Middle East–North Africa (MENA) region. Education at Campus El Gouna follows the internationally respected high standards of Technische Universität Berlin and closes with the Master of Science of this university. The courses will enable young professionals in leading positions to solve problems on an excellent professional level and gives them excellent perspectives for their professional career. Campus El Gouna offers students outstanding working conditions: Modern buildings with excellent facilities, laboratories and halls for experiments for Energy and Water Engineering according to current German standards.

Activities in the First Term 2012/13 The first term of the master programs ended in February with examinations and a bundle of academic events: • Teams of Urban Development students presented their feasibility studies for the development of Haram City, a new town near Cairo. • The Energy Engineering program finalized the project „Sustainable Energy Supply for El Gouna“. • Water Engineering students had the opportunity to hear guest professors from Brazil, Spain and Germany. The series of public academic events besides these master programs was continued with the two conferences:

• „Urban Mobility and Integrated Transportation Planning” bringing together research groups from China, Vietnam, India, South Africa, Iran and Germany discussing innovative solutions for traffic planning. • The „2nd Community Forum El Gouna 2030“ was dedicated to the topic „Meteorological and Climatological Dimensions of Urban Planning“. The Community Forum El Gouna 2030 is a platform for a continuous and systematic discussion of strategic topics of the urban development of El Gouna and its neighborhood in the Red Sea Region.

Applicants Welcome! In October 2013 the second intake for the master programs will start. This gives inhabitants of Hurghada and the Red Sea Region the chance to acquire a German master degree studying in the region. • You want more information? During a two weeks field campaign for measuring the meteorological data of El Gouna conducted by 45 international students a new weather station was opened.
