The Lithuanian community in Hurghada is celebrating the centenary of the restoration of Lithuania's independence.
 
It introduces culture and history of Lithuania to the public of the Red Sea through a series of events. The festivities opened with the "Lithuanian Days" held in the Hurghada Cultural Center on October 25-26, where guests enjoyed piano, violin and kankles (the traditional Lithuanian national instrument) music by the renowned Lithuanian composer, M.K.Čiurlionis. Lithuanian folk dances and songs, national meals, and artisan works were highlighted.
 
Three exhibitions opened to mark the occasion. There was an exhibition of the most famous Lithuanian painter of the XIX - XX centuries, a pioneer of symbolism and abstractionism, M.K.Čiurlionis Additionally, the M.Jovaiša photo exhibition "Unseen Lithuania" and the exhibition of Hurghada based artist, J.Vitkevičiūtė, who presented authentic paper cuttings, enriched by traditional folkloric elements.
 
The event was opened by Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Arab Republic of Egypt, A.Daunoravičius and the Governor of the Red Sea Provinces, His Excellency Major General Ahmed Abdalla.
 
On the 1st of December, M.K.Čiurlionis and J.Vitkevičiūtė exhibitions were opened at the El Gouna Library and will run until December 31st.
 
The Lithuanian community is grateful to the Lithuanian Embassy in Egypt, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cultural center in Hurghada, El Gouna Library, the M.K.Čiurlionis Museum and M.Jovaiša whose contributions were indispensable to make the event happen.
